Age of Empires III is a real-time strategy game that pits you against a variety of nations during the Age of Discovery.
When it comes to real-time strategies, the Age of Empires franchise is the gold standard. This game series has been around for well over two decades, and Age of Empires 3 is one of Ubisoft's most popular titles. This game puts you in charge of various Age of Discovery nations as they battle one another for control of the Americas.
In the base game, you can play as eight different nations as well as a variety of mercenary troops. You also have the option of playing as different Native American tribes, but those matches will be limited to land battles. The primary goal of each match is to eradicate all of your enemy’s units, and that can only be done with cunning battlefield strategies. Each nation has its own unique perks, and those traits have a major impact on how the matches play out.
For the single-player campaign, you will work your way through three separate acts, and every act has a variety of battles and engagements. During the first few stages, your nation is going to be limited to basic units and buildings. Once you have won a few of those matches, you are going to unlock dozens of new tech trees, traits, and units. While the vast majority of the campaign battles are nothing more than melee matches, there are a handful of scenario games as well. In some matches, you are only going to win if you complete very specific goals, such as capturing a certain building or holding off your enemies until reinforcements arrive.
Building a successful colony might seem complicated at first, but you will be able to master all of the unique mechanics in this game before you know it. Once you have beaten the campaign, you can play against AI opponents, build your own maps, or even play online with other fans of the series. With its beautiful graphics and intense gameplay, this Mac port continues to be one of the best real-time strategies on the market.
